Setting default players in Ubuntu
Who would have guessed that it could be so easy, but yet quite hard to find for someone who is new to Ubuntu to setup default players for certain files? What, you didn’t fire up the terminal… did you?
For those who are wanting to set a default player/app with a particular file, it’s actually really easy using the GUI. I came across a forum where a few fairly experience Linux users were trying to figure it out by manually editing various conf files but it turned out, you can easily Right-Click on file chosen, let’s say ‘movie.avi’ and a new window will pop-up with a list of applications for your selection. Check out the screenshots below:
Yes, it’s easy and very basic, but easily overlooked.
In case you’re wondering about default mail and browser application, you can set them at System -> Preferences -> Preferred Applications.
Hope this will come in useful.

This didn’t work for me, but I found another way, at least in 6.10
-Right click on a file and click “properties”
-select the “open with” tab
-select the program you want using the radio button
This should work for all the files of this type, not just the one you selected
